Just as the recent storm tore through the north-west the night before, City blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome represented consecutive WSL setbacks for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance league and European football with a limited squad has been a widely debated topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked weary throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Final Period

The primary adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the game. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, hitting the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a one shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to overcome any opponent who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
