Wythenshawe Veterans Over 35s are located in southern Manchester and compete in the Cheshire Vets Division Top Division.

Ireland started playing for the team in pre-season this season through good mate and present Wythenshawe player Blake Norton, and the ex- Republic of Ireland player then invited additional ex-pros, who all compete in a midweek small-sided match, to participate.

"It's a bit different but then, I enjoy running and just move inside - I'm not defending that much," he added.

"I tell my centre-back 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to continue attacking.

"The running is what I'm seeking. It's enjoyable."

'Surreal Experience

Along with the forward's six goals on his first game, Ireland has scored eight in three games for Wythenshawe, while George Boyd scored five on his debut match and Joleon Lescott, a centre-half by trade, notched a hat-trick in one match up front.

Wythenshawe are top of the Premier Tier with three wins from three and a goal difference of plus nineteen.

One opponent, 38, who plays on the flank for the opposition, came up against ex- Wigan defender Figueroa on Sunday - and had to explain his nine-year-old son who Heskey was.

"It was going round like wildfire they had all these ex-Premier League players," remarked the player.

"I think I was a little awestruck playing against him to be honest.

"Even Emile [Heskey] got on and he's has over 60 English caps.

"We held our own for a good twenty minutes but then we had a man sent off and it was tough.

"Our group really haven't stopped talking about it - I was calling my mum and sibling on the way home.

"They were all dead sound, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a bunch of normal guys.

"Now we are eager for the second fixture."
